Compared to a male human, gorillas have very small penises and testicles. Yet despite their size - adult gorillas can weigh up to 374lbs - male gorillas are not known to be well endowed. It's therefore not uncommon to hear of a gorilla mating with one of their half-siblings. She also noted this competitive behavior could explain how humans evolved into a mostly monogamous species.īut gorillas remain a polygamous species in the animal kingdom and dominant males will often have sex with multiple females. 'It seems to us that mating is another tactic that females use to compete with each other – in this case to gain favor with another male,' primatologist Diane Doran-Sheehy said. Research has also proven that the great apes can have an orgasm from intercourse, which female gorillas have been known to use as a tactic to take down their enemies. 'The range of non-conceptive sex acts include genital-to-genital rubbing, oral sex, mutual masturbation and even the seemingly human-exclusive practice of French kissing,' according to primatologist Frans de Waal, co-author of Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape. In fact, gorillas are one of the only other species to have sex in the missionary position with partners of either the same or opposite sex. Humans and gorillas have 98 per cent of the same DNA and thus it's not so shocking that our closest living relatives aren't too different from us when it comes to having sex. 'It contributes to an understanding of the range in behavioural responses of wild apes to novel objects.' Justifying their subject matter, the researchers conclude: 'This unusual observation raises questions about the function of masturbation in male chimpanzees. 'Considering he exhibited a play face while "copulating" with the bottle indicates his masturbatory behaviour was "pleasurable" or "fun."' 'The physical properties of the open bottle presumably elicited Araali’s autoerotic response, suggesting he recognized its suitability for that purpose,' they add. Masturbation in chimps is sometimes thought to help with competition in a tribe with several males by clearing out old or damaged sperm and improving a male's chances of impregnating a female, the researchers add.Īnother theory is that it may help relieve sexual urges in subordinate males who have little access to females in the tribe.īut they say neither theory quite fits Araali's behaviour, which most-likely results from 'his motivation to inspect and play with a novel human object.' While most apes are either indifferent to or afraid of man-made objects, this tribe's familiarity with them means they 'elicit interest'. The scientists - from Oxford Brookes University, University of Exeter, and Utrecht University - say this is likely because the chimps they were studying live in close proximity to humans, and have some familiarity with man-made objects. Males have also used natural objects such as fruit or smooth stones to stimulate themselves - but this is the first time one has been seen using a man-made object.
